Jack Davis Rogers

Jack and Dylan were born in Brisbane on the 14th of September 1993. Dylan's membrane had ruptured at 17 weeks gestation and the doctors told me I would loose both babies however I held on for 8 weeks and they were born at 25weeks. Jack weighed 830 grams and Dylan weighed 760 grams. Jack had a brain hemorrhage on Day 1 which has resulted in mild quadriplegic cerebral palsy. On day 7 he had patent duct operation on his heart and remained in ICU for 10 weeks. Dylan unfortunately died on day 20 from multiple pneumothoraxes (holes in his lungs). Jack came home 4 1/2 months later on home oxygen which he remained on for about 18 months. He developed a stridor at about 4 months corrected and had his 1st microlarynoscopy at approx. 1 yr old. The diagnosis is subglottic stenosis and tracheal malacia due to being intubated for 8 weeks. Just before his 4th birthday he had CO2 laser surgery but it didn't work and 3 weeks later he had a tracheostomy which he still has. Very soon he will have his 1st LTP and if all goes well we will begin the decannulation process. Jack is also severe to profoundly deaf and attends a Hearing Impaired Unit within a regular school. At first I was scared to leave him by himself in case the trachy comes out but I've trained the teachers how to suction him and what to do if it does come out. We are fortunate that he does not have a complete blockage and has a few hours to get to a hospital before he starts to have any real trouble. We will keep you updated on his surgery.
