Cameron Lizana
September 7, 1999 - February 2, 2000Hi, my name is Debbie Johnson and I am Cameron Lizana's grandmother. Cameron has an identical twin brother named Colby. They were born at 36 weeks and both were not breathing when they were born. Colby came through ok, but Cameron did not fair so well. We found out later that at 31 weeks his oxygen was cut off somewhat because they were in the same placenta and had no membrane separating them. Their cords got entangled which deprived Cameron of oxygen and caused him to have a stroke. Both sides of his brain in his motor skills was severely damaged and mild damage to the rest of his brain. We came close to losing this little fellow on about 3 different occasions. About a month and a half ago he was released from the hospital and we had him home for 2 hours and his heart quit, we performed CPR for about 15 minutes until the ambulance arrived. Once we got to the hospital we found out he had pneumonia. Three days later both his lungs collapsed and a chest tube had to be inserted. We could have lost him that night but the doctor just happened to be standing next to his bed when it happened. God was watching out for him. He recovered from those two episodes. The week before Christmas he had the feeding tube put into his stomach. Before he recovered fully from that the doctor approached us about the trach tube. This really scared us to death. But after a little research and learning more about it we determined that it was in Cameron's best interest to have this procedure done. He is still in the hospital, (he has gotten a staph infection, but the doctors believe it will be cleared up by tomorrow) he will be going into a regular room on Monday and we will start staying with him at the hospital to learn how to care for him. I just pray to God that we can give this little fellow all the care and Love that he so justly deserves. He will probably be coming home next weekend (that is a little scary, but yet exciting). He will be 4 months old on January 7, and has been in the hospital since birth, except for the few hours he was released. The doctor diagnosed him as cerebral palsy spastic quadriplegic. We are really taking it a day at the time and I feel in my heart that he is gonna be our miracle baby. Thanks so much for giving me the opportunity to tell you about our little angel from God.
Cameron with twin brother Colby
We have had Cameron home for two weeks now and everything is going really good. We had to make a trip to the emergency room on 1/22/00, he has an upper respiratory infection but it is not that bad. We are just spending a lot of time with him and giving him a lot of love. We have an appointment for an evaluation for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy on February 16. We are really excited about this, the doctor believes that he can get Cameron some recovery. Our days involve mostly suctioning and feeding Cameron, it was really scary at first but everyone caught on really quick on the care and we have really got to know him since he has been home. He can make different face expressions and we just seem to know what he needs. In about a month, the doctor said we could try the Passy-Muir Valve.
Since I sent you the update Cameron got really sick with pnuemonia. He passed away yesterday (Wednenday, February 2, 2000). It was really tough to let him go but he is in a beautiful and safe place and he is no longer suffering.
