James Lawson
James (Jimmy) Lawson
Jimmy was born with a muscle disease that Dr's call Congenital Myopathy, which is a general term for "muscle weakness", because they don't know exactly what it is, or how Jimmy got it. Although it's very similar to Muscular Dystrophy, it isn't classified as such because it's not genetic. Jimmy has always been prone to pneumonia. 5 years ago when he was in the hospital again for pneumonia, portions of his lungs collapsed and he needed to be put on a Bi-PAP. Eventually, he only needed the Bi-PAP at night...when his breathing would become too shallow while sleeping soundly. For 5 years, Jimmy did great...until this year. He got pneumonia, and his Bi-PAP just wasn't enough, anymore. He was trached on October 7th, 1999. It's now Nov. 15th, and we're still waiting for Jimmy to come home from the hospital. He is SO anxious to get back to his sister, Sara, his dog, Cosmo, and his COMPUTER! He says he doesn't miss school, though. :o) Jimmy is a sophomore in H.S. this year. Please visit Jimmy's Web Site. He created it himself.
Jimmy and his sister Update October 2001 - Jimmy has been doing well. He has had bacterial infections now and then, but he has not been admitted into the hospital since he came home from getting his trach. Jimmy is vent dependant, but he is able to be off the vent during the day for several hours. He mainly needs it when he is sleeping.
