Kennedy Dell Huckins

Kennedy dell Huckins was born 4/5/2004 he has a tracheostomy and a g-tube. He was extubating himself about three times a week and was not strong enough to breathe on his own. He also has BPD. My husband and I tried to conceive for about 4 years using fertility treatments, hormone shots and all and we were actually on our last try when we found out we were pregnant with quadruplets. We were so excited that we bought a new home big enough for our new family, but then at about 10 weeks we miscarried one of our babies and then I was put on bedrest. At 24weeks I went into labor, My water broke and we rushed to the hospital that was about one and fifteen minutes away we made it just in time for Kennedy to be born within ten minutes. Kennedy was a vaginal birth all natural and he came out at five centimeters dilated and butt first folded in half in his sac. My cervix then closed up and I was put on my head for the next three days until my water broke again and the other two Cameron and Casey were born.  Kennedy weighed just 1lb 14 oz and Cameron and Casey were 1lb 9 oz.

Casey who was the youngest and smallest came home first at four and a half mos. we still had to travel every day back and forth the hour and fifteen minutes until we got into a car accident with Casey in the car we fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into another car only mirror to mirror and everyone was okay but that was enough to make us realize we could not do everything but we could not be away from our children so we got an apartment from another family to stay in. On September 23, 2004 Kennedy had his trach surgery but at 4:00am he began bleeding and almost went into shock. The medications he was on made his veins shrink up and they had to put a pic line in to transfuse him. Our boys struggled with many sicknesses from E. coli to sepsis to paraflu, etc. etc.

Anyway Cameron your other son had to have five inches of his intestines removed (NEC) at three days old and had a colostomy. He also had retinotherapy, bilateral hernia, Broviac and reinastimosis. After Kennedy had his surgery we had to go to another hospital for a second opinion that was another two hours away so we were then in three places at once. Cameron passed away at 6 mos. He was a candidate for all organ transplants and he could not have survived. We got a call in the ICN in one hospital to the ICN in another hospital telling us that Kennedy might not make it while we were sitting beside our sweet Cameron watching him decline. At four in the morning without any time to grieve we had to drive two hours to the other hospital to see Kennedy and pray that he would make it. That day Cameron showed us he was with us and gave the other two strength.  Casey came off his oxygen that day and slowly Kennedy began to improve.

Kennedy came home after 8 months in the ICN and has really done pretty well.  We have our sicknesses, but all in all we are just so lucky to have little fighters. Our sweet children are out everything. Financially as I am sure many of you are all too familiar with has been quite a struggle we just had to file bankruptcy and our house is being foreclosed on but I would do it all again if it meant having my boys with me. Please feel free to e-mail any time because I have a lot of different areas I had to deal with and I would love to hear some experiences or just share with someone that understands. Hope to hear from you soon.
