John Murphy

We had tried to get pregnant for five years when we decided to try a fertility clinic. In June 2004 I was suppose to go into the clinic once I got my period to start shots, I forgot the name of the medication, but they would help with producing eggs. July came along and I still didn't get my period so I called the clinic to have a test done. Turns out we got pregnant all on our own! That is one reason why we know John is a miracle and meant to be here! John Murphy was Born March 29th, 2005. I had a wonderful pregnancy with no complications at all. However, once John was born they took him to the other end of the room and began bagging him. He had the cord wrapped around his neck three times and was not breathing. That was not even the big issue. After an X-ray it was determined that he had a right-sided Diaphragmatic Hernia. In addition to this, he has pulmonary hypertension and mecosin digestion. John was taken to Children's Memorial Hospital immediately. After having John at Swedish Hospital, twelve hours later I insisted on going to Children's. They finally released me. The doctors at Children's explained what had happened and told us John had a 10% chance of living. We could not believe what we were hearing. It was all so surreal, like we were watching someone else go through this all. About a week old they put John on . It is like a heart and lung bypass for a child. He was on ECMO for 14days. He is such a little fighter!

Today, John is still in the hospital at almost 5 months old. He has been through a lot as far as meds and surgery. After the ECMO he had his surgery for the DH. He passed with flying colors. Our biggest battle was over, so we thought. Now we are working on getting John to breathe on his own. One of the issues with kids with a DH is reflux. He had a trach put in June 24th because the ventilator ET-tube and server reflux caused treacheamalacia, a loss of consistency in the trach area. In August 05, we were told that John has become addicted to the meds he is on, Meth and Ativan. So now our short term goal is getting him off his addiction. And our long term goal is making him happy enough to go to a long term vent and come home. We still have a long battle ahead of us but I know John will do it!!
