Riley Kirk
Riley Kirk was born on June 7, 1996. About eight weeks later she started having
problems breathing. At first she was diagnosed with the Croup and we were told the
breathing problems would subside within about 10 days. They didn't. A local ENT referred
us to a specialist at the University hospital in Iowa City who diagnosed a subglottic
hemangioma. Riley received her trach in August of 1996 and started Interferon therapy and
laser surgeries. By December she still had not gained back much weight and the surgeon
reported concerns in some quarters that Interferon may cause neurological damage in
infants. We saw a neurologist who was not at all pleased with her development. Consulting
with that doctor and our original specialist, we decided to stop the interferon. Riley
started gained an appetite and weight almost overnight. She continues laser surgeries
every eight weeks or so and we are hopeful the trach will be removed in late 1997 or early
1998.
- Update: Riley Kirk has been
successfully decannulated.
