Jayden Austin Burton
Jayden Austin Burton - Diagnosis: 24 week preemie, bpd, subglottis stenosis, lower airway
bronchomalacia, pda ligation, ROP,Grade II IVH, history of hyperbilirubnemia.
My name is Katie and I am the mother of handsome little guy named Jayden Austin. He was born while we were on vacation visiting my sister in Arizona in August of 2003. It was the last night we were there when I lost my mucous plug and began bleeding and having cramps. So, I ate my sister wonderful dinner (since I didn't want to go to the hospital starving like all the other times) and then went to the first hospital (level 2) to find out I was in labor and already to a 9. I couldn't believe it. The nurse checked me and found a bulging bag of water and freaked out. Because when I got to the level 3 hospital (by helicopter, by the way) I found out I was actually only a 3.
After a couple of days of the Magnesium Sulfate and lots of shots, they finally had to let me just go into labor because I had ruptured. So we got there Sunday night and ruptured Wednesday and finally had a C-section on Friday, because Jayden had turned around and fell through feet first. I was at 6 cm. Jayden was born 11:42 am on August 15th, 2003. He was 1 lb. 8 oz. and 12 inches long. He was not breathing on his own and was put on a oscillator and then later switched to a conventional ventilator. He was black and blue for the first 3 days or so and had severely deep wounds on both the tops of his feet. I actually thought he was going to loss his right foot. And on his second day of life he had some seizures and then acquired Grade II brain bleeding. He had a bacterial infection and was on IV antibiotics for 10 days. He had the PDA ligation surgery on Sept 4th,2003 (3 weeks old). This was the first day that I got to hold him. And I only got to do so because our nurse was so caring, she really wanted to give us that opportunity just in case Jayden didn't make it out of surgery. She even took pictures of it for us. She also gave us a little
journal to keep for Jayden so we could write everything done that had happen to him. Then when he gets older we'll give it to him to keep.
On Oct 22nd, Jayden had lasar surgery on both of his eyes. He had pre-plus disease, and stage 2
ROP in left eye and stage 3 in right eye. I was relieved when we got past all that. I thought that would be the end of it. Jayden would get off the ventilator and grow a little more and then we could go back to Illinois. Well it broke our hearts more than anything when he failed many more
self-extubation and then the scheduled ones after taking a couple doses of steroids.
Finally the due date came Dec. 4th, 2003, but Jayden was still not breathing on his own. We got the go ahead from the insurance to medically transport him back to St. Louis Children's Hospital on Dec. 5th. He got his trach on Dec. 12, 2003. And then on Jan 2, 2004 we finally got to bring him home. He's still on oxygen but growing so well. We brought
him home weighing 7 lbs. His last doctors appointment in St. Louis was on February 26, 2004 he weighed 10 lbs. We PRAY he gets off the oxygen very soon.
