Shawn Caputo

Hi, my son Shawn Caputo has a trach in. He is a twin born on April 25, 2003 at 5lb 9oz. and 19 inches. At 38 weeks, so he was a good size for a twin. He was rushed in to Boston Children Hospital 2 hours after birth. I saw him for maybe 5 minutes if that (I had a emergency C-section so I was out of it when I saw him). So I really didn't know what was going on, his twin brother Brian is prefect fine. So I didn't understand. The Doctors told me a SMMC that had a stage 4 cleft lip and palate and he wasn't breathing well. They had him all hooked up. It broke my heart to see him. Three days later I left the hospital drop his brother at my moms house and went to see my son for really the first time. I broke down, " WHY?" I kept saying, his brother is fine, how could this happen. He was on all kinds of tubes. Then they told me that he couldn't breath on his on he need help. So about two weeks later they put in a trach and a G-tube. He was there for another 2 weeks and then transferred to a local hospital to finish training. He's been home for over 2 months with NO problems. He is going in for surgery at Children's on Tuesday September 9th. To repair his cleft lip. If that goes well in the spring they'll do his palate and start capping the trach to see what happens.

Update, October 2003:  Hi, It's been 3 weeks since Shawn surgery. He was in the the operation room for 16 hours. It all startes at 7:30AM. He had his trach upgrade to a 3.5, they also placed a Mickey in. Then came Dr. Mulkin (Plastic Surger). The things that doctor can do is unbeliveable. We got to see him at 2:00AM. Everything went fine he looks so good now. He can finally close his eye's. He is taken to the spoon pretty good so far. He is 12lbs now. I'll send a picture soon. Thanks for having this website. It really helps.
