Stephanie Taylor

My family consists of Angela (mum), Ian (dad), Georgina (big sister, 4) and Stephanie, 3 1/2 months (born 14/10/2002). We live in the UK.

At four weeks old Stephanie was rushed into PICU at Queens Medial Centre, Nottingham with breathing difficulties. After an endoscopy we were told that she had a laryngomalacia and would need surgery to correct it, but as their specialist was on holiday we were to be transferred to Sheffield Children's Hospital.

Whilst there her surgeon, Mr. Bull, performed the operation and she was extribated, only to begin having problems again. After re-incubation they performed another endoscopy to find that the trachea was being blocked by a swelling pressing against it. He decided to transfer Stephanie to Great Ormond Street.

At GOS Mr. Hartley diagnosed a lymphatic malformation (cystic hygroma) and decided that the best way forward would be for her to have a tracheostomy whilst he treated the mass with schlerotherapy, which was done early December. We came out of hospital two days before Christmas, after 5 1/2 weeks in hospital.

We go back to GOS on 10th February for another endoscopy to see how the mass has reacted to the treatment and to plan either further treatment or decannulation.
