Cody Michael Trembecki

My name is Cody Michael Trembecki and I was born on July 3, 2002. I was born at 23 5/7 weeks gestation and weighed only 530 grams or 1 lb. 2 oz. My twin brother, Devon, was only one ounce bigger than me and was born first. My Mom wasn't expecting us that early, but Devon's water broke and there was no stopping us after that. My brother only made it to be 9 days old and is now my guardian angel. I had all of the normal "preemie" issues, PDA, ROP, BPD, and I was ventilated for a long time. The one thing I didn't have that my Mom and Dad were very happy about was a brain bleed. I was very lucky.

I was very busy the whole time I was in the hospital. I pulled out my ET tube 18 times and I also had 8 planned extubations. All of this activity with my airway did some damage so on November 20,2002 I got my trach. I also had my hernias fixed at the same time and recovered well from both. I was finally breathing on my own and for once my Mom and Dad could see my face. I did get an NG tube for feeding, but my Mom didn't let that stay around too long. I pulled that out too and she was tired of putting it back in.

I am now almost 14 pounds and eating everything by mouth. I have only been in the hospital 2 times for pneumonia. I have glasses, but hate to leave them on. And I need a helmet to reshape my head...it shouldn't take that long! Other than that, my development is right on track for my adjusted age. My Mom and Dad are so proud of me!!

Update, June 2004 - Cody is now officially off of his oxygen during the day and only needs it when he sleeps. He finds the freedom amazing now that he can run wherever he wants to without having to worry about getting wrapped around the furniture!! He does need some minor eye surgery at the end of June to correct a 'lazy' eye, but other than that is developmentally on track for a 23 month old (19 months adjusted). Cody will need the LTP surgery in order to be decannulated, but that surgery will wait until the Spring of 2005...we want him to have a chance to grow a little more and let his lungs become stronger.

Daddy's shoes and no oxygen!
