Janina Alvarez

Hi my name is Laresa Carney. My daughter's name is Janina Alvarez. I had her at 27 weeks. She weighed 2lbs 1 oz. I almost had her on Christmas of 2001. She came the next day, December 26, 2001. Her original due date was March 25, 2002. Janina was intubated four minutes after birth for respiratory distress. She required ventilator support and failed several weanings. She was diagnosed with subglottic stenosis and a tracheostomy was performed on 4/3/02. She required a 3.5 Neo Shiley after repeated plugging of a 3.0. She was able to be weaned from ventilator support with the trach. She has stabilized on humidified oxygen at 1/4 liter. She nipples about half of her feedings the rest goes through a NG tube. She had a small hole in her heart, but the cardiologist said it closed but has hypertension. She was discharged from the hospital on June 17, 2002. Janina is active and has pulled her NG tube out several times. Her trach has become dislodged a couple times (very scary). She does have 15 hours of nursing care Monday - Friday. That has been an adjustment having a lot of people coming in and out for Janina. The big adjustment came for our two year old son, who gets jealous because of the nurses and therapists coming in for Janina. She has a lot of appointments (pediatrician, cardiologist, ENT and various therapy)
