Hayley Danielle Zarzana

I am so happy to have found your web-site. My daughter, Hayley Danielle Zarzana was trached on 12/20/01 by Dr. Michael Rothchild at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.

Hayley is 5 and a half years old. She was born after 41 1/2 weeks gestation. There was meconium present and the doctors waited too long to deliver her. She was in distress for about 12 hours. As a result she has had seizures and is severely developmentally delayed. She can not walk, or talk. She is considered to be cortically blind. She is able to eat thickened liquids and pureed foods by mouth. She has had several bouts of pneumonia and needed the trach after 6 episodes of respiratory distress in about 8 months.

Hayley has nurses and therapists that come to our house to work with her. I am a junior high school teacher. I work about 2 blocks from the house so I am able to get to her fast in the event of an emergency.

Hayley and I are alone. My husband and I split up when she was 13 months old and he is not at all involved in her life. We do it alone and together. She is a delightful child with a wonderful personality and is an extremely pleasant little girl.

Update March 2003 - Hayley is now almost seven years old. She is growing beautifully physically. The trach was the best thing for her as she has not had pneumonia since her trach was done in December 2001. She had to get a g-tube and a nissonfundalplication, but she is thriving and healthier than before. She is still having seizures, but they seemed to have lessened both in length and in amount.

We are doing pretty well. We will be moving in a few months to our own home and we are well. I love this web-site as it helped me feel that we are not alone in this and it also offers a great deal of information. I have recommended this site to many nurses, doctors, and parents.  Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your web-site.

Update, July 26th 2003:  Hayley is doing quite well. She is growing nicely and she is a very pleasant and peaceful little girl. Hayley is my biggest source of joy and pain. Isn't it funny how one little girl can mean so much? I wanted to share a few pictures with the group and show how Hayley is thriving thanks to the trach.
